Antidote Preventing Drug Overdose Deaths But Not Solving Overall Problem Of Addiction

(Carroll County Times, Dec. 26) More first responders are carrying an antidote that has saved heroin and opioid overdose victims from death. The antidote, naloxone, has become a critical life-saving step in Maryland and around the country where first responders are trained to carry it, especially in the wake of the heroin epidemic. However, while lives are being saved, the drug problem isn't being solved, officials say. In Maryland alone, there were 648 heroin and opioid drug-related deaths in the first half of 2015. More and more overdoses are occurring, which means more people are falling victim to drug abuse.
