Drug Overdose Deaths Surge Among Young Women, Pitt Study Shows

(Trib Live, March 10) More young white females are overdosing from drug use than other drug users, according to a new study. Research from the University of Pittsburgh shows that deaths in Pennsylvania among women increased 17-fold, compared to 14-fold all other users between 1979 and 2014, when opioids and heroin began to increase. Scientists surmise that the increase may be because women tend to become serious addicts faster than men, and may be more hesitant to seek treatment because they don't want to lose their children.
