Drug Overdoses Propel Rise in Mortality Rates of Young Whites

(The New York Times, Jan. 16) A analysis by the New York Times of death certificates revealed that drug overdoses has shifted dramatically to young white males between 1990 to 2014. These numbers have driven the death rate to levels comparable to that of the AIDS epidemic. Death rates from overdoses among minority groups continued to fall, but grew almost five times for young whites between 25 and 34. The drugs were linked to illegal and prescription medications.
