Live in Hawaii, And Odds Are You'll Need Fewer Prescription Meds

(NPR, August 31) People who live in the Aloha state are a lot less likely to abuse prescription drugs than people in other U.S. states, according to a recent data analysis. In 2015, Hawaiian Medicare beneficiaries used fewer opioid painkillers, antibiotics, antipsychotic drugs and other high-addiction risk drugs for seniors than people in any other state. Nonprofit news service ProPublica looked at data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to come to this conclusion. In addition, numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that the state of Hawaii has one of the lowest prescribing rates in the nation. Read more.
